The port of Ushuaia is located in the homonymous bay, sort of large sac that forms on the north coast of the Beagle Channel, west of Punta Segunda. Southwest is limited by the Ushuaia Peninsula, which protects it from the winds from this direction, and South and Southeast of the islands and islets Bridges. To the north, the stress on forests consistently snowy summits of the mountain chain of Martial, which outlined the Bay. To the northeast stands Mount Olivia, elevation of 1318 meters, which is clearly identifiable by the sharpness of the peaks and the regularity of their skirts. The southwest coast is the Peninsula from Ushuaia, on the contrary is rather low and accessible beaches pedregullo; inland the ground is soft and undulating with a few scattered trees, abundant water and pasture for livestock. At the birth of the Peninsula are closed to form a corner by the outgoing called South Point Observatory, in which there is no usable beach by boat, as it is closed by the narrow road that connects the built-up area of the Point Observatory city of Ushuaia. Two rivers, the Grande and Olivia, leading to the Bay of Ushuaia water from the melt, leading to the coast north to a nautical mile away from each other.
The pier of the Provincial Directorate of Ports, also called Commercial Wharf, formerly the Governor's Wharf, is the largest in the province. Its structure is of reinforced concrete and is located in the northwest sector of the bay facing SSE. On March 14 1999 were inaugurated the commercial facilities of the new wharf, whose technical characteristics are:
